Exploring Resurrection Life through the Dynamism of Music
Duke Initiatives in Theology and the Arts presents a concert with a difference. Through a wide variety of music – including classical and jazz, film and folk, Irish keening and Baroque brass – interspersed with spoken words, the evening will explore the theme of resurrection: the claim that through the bodily raising of Jesus from the dead, humans can anticipate a transformed life beyond death in a re-created world.
Featuring the New Caritas Orchestra, soprano soloist Awet Andemicael, and the celebrated singer-songwriter Sandra McCracken the evening will be led by DITA Director Dr. Jeremy Begbie. He will invite the audience on a journey in sound—plumbing the depths of the world’s sorrow and scaling the heights of an Easter hope. The concert includes a new solo by McCracken as well as new work specially commissioned for the event by the award-winning Argentinian-Mexican composer Josh Rodriguez and original poetry by Debbie Whitton Spriggs and Malcolm Guite. So come and hear what music can do to kindle a fresh and revitalizing hope, even in the darkest of times. This event is the conference’s Saturday keynote; tickets are included in the registration cost.

The New Caritas Orchestra
Founded in 2015 by DITA Director Dr. Jeremy Begbie, the New Caritas Orchestra is one of a kind. Comprised of musicians from the top symphonies, orchestras, chamber groups, and ensembles throughout the United States and beyond, the orchestra exists to present high-quality orchestral performances that enrich and nourish faith and theological imagination, both for the players and the audience.
A hallmark of DITA’s mission and ministry since its founding, the orchestra has performed three full-length orchestral concerts at Duke University. For the first time in its history, the Orchestra will play in an off-campus venue. Life Unbounded will take place on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2025, at the Carolina Theatre of Durham, a historical landmark and non-profit that exists to support and nourish the arts in the Triangle community. Begbie and the orchestra will also collaborate more extensively than ever before, performing alongside singers from Duke Chapel under the direction of Dr. Zebulon Highben, as well as renowned singer-songwriter Sandra McCracken, the Argentinian/Mexican composer Josh Rodriguez, and the acclaimed poet Malcolm Guite.
Life Unbounded thus marks a landmark in DITA’s and Duke Divinity School’s history. All are invited to come and explore the theme of resurrection life through word and sound. Tickets are included in conference fees. They are also available for individual purchase for $20 with additional fees. Student ticket rates are available by calling the box office at 919-560-3030.

What people are saying…
“DITA10 was an incredible experience. Playing in the orchestra and attending DITA10 was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I look forward to the next event!”
“The concert was not only appropriate for our time but greatly needed. We all have felt pangs of hopelessness recently … and the presentation of the Christian message of loss and hope through the arts was superb.”
